Throughout my time on this study abroad experience, I have loved every second of it! So far, I have not felt too much of a cultural shock while being in London, UK for five nights. London reminds me of New York when riding the Tube because it is very similar to riding the Subway. It is also nice to know that most people speak English and are used to tourists all throughout the city. Of course a big cultural difference would be how those in London drive on the left side of the road, while the U.S. drives on the right. We had to really pay attention to this when crossing the street and during our bike tours in order to not get hit by a car. Some other differences I have noticed is that you have to ask for the check at restaurants, instead of the waiters coming to you, like in the U.S. The waiters in London like to let those eating dine and enjoy the restaurant more, while the U.S. seems to rush those to leave. Finally, London does not use as much ice in their water and beverages like America does. My best guess as to why they do this is because room temperature water may be easier to digest than ice cold water. Although there are some cultural differences, I do not believe that these are very substantial, and I will most likely see bigger ones throughout the rest of my trip! Overall, I have loved this global business program with Dr. Mac, and I have learned a lot from Design Bridge and Partners, Chelsea Football Club, and Lloyd’s of London Insurance presentations and tours! Not only have these businesses been amazing to learn about, but also London and the United Kingdom’s history! We toured the Houses of Parliament and learned a lot of cool facts about Westminster Abbey. I am ecstatic to visit more countries in Europe and learn about more cultural differences and companies!
