It’s been just about one week since we’ve arrived in Qatar and it’s already been a week to remember. From the beautiful skyline, the unique architecture, to the amazing food it’s all been a wonderful experience for me. This is my first time outside of the United States and it’s been extremely cool experiencing the different culture and societal norms here in Qatar compared to what is in the States. Society here is definitely based a lot more on religion and culture as there is no widespread alcohol consumption, most actions here occur if “god wills” it to occur, and the sense of respect for everyone’s surroundings I feel walking around the city is anything like what I’ve experienced back home. Aside from most laws being guided by religion we’ve also learned that the Emir holds practically all the power here from the class we’re currently in at Texas A&M Qatar. It’s very interesting to learn how and why he has all the power he does and the vast history behind it. So far we’ve visited two farm/processing companies where we saw how they operated during all times of the year and it was very interesting to learn more about how the food we see in grocery stores gets to those shelves. I would also like to shout out my fellow peers on this trip as they’ve made this experience so fun, and to think not many of us knew each other before this is even cooler. In just a few days we’ve grown into great friends and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the trip has in store for us. If you’re reading this and considering coming to Qatar for the Winter, I’d say go for it. This opportunity has been nothing short of amazing and I’m so glad I’m here now trying new foods and learning all about different cultures. It’s such a cool and wonderful experience to see the world around the States. I look forward to learning more about their culture and trying more new things.
